Cystitis


Cystitis is the inflammation of the urinary bladder and can also be associated with kidney troubles.

Symptoms of cystitis are:

  • Continuous urge of passing urine and experiencing a burning sensation while passing urine.
  • Pain in the pelvis and lower abdomen.
  • Thick, dark and foul smelling urine.
  • Urine accompanied with blood or pus.
  • Pain in lower back in certain cases.
  • Rise in body temperature. Chronic cystitis has the similar symptoms however patient won’t have fever.

Causes of cystitis are:

  • Infection in the bladder, kidney, the urethra, the vagina or the prostate gland.
  • Irritation and inflammation of the bladder if urine is controlled for a long duration.
  • Severe constipation.
  • Kidney or bladder stones
  • Enlarged prostate.

Home remedies for cystitis are:

  • A cup of cucumber juice mixed with a teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of fresh lime juice and taken three times daily is a useful remedy to treat cystitis as cucumber is a good diuretic.
  • Fresh juice of the flowers of drumsticks is also effective to cure cystitis. Also one teaspoon of this juice mixed with half glass of tender coconut water and taken twice daily is also very helpful.
  • Radish leaves juices taken once daily in the morning is very valuable to cure cystitis.
  • A decoction of lady’s fingers along with water taken twice daily is also very effective.
  • Fresh spinach juice taken with equal quantity of tender coconut water twice daily is very beneficial in curing cystitis.
  • Lemon juice mixed with boiling water and taken when cooled after every two hours will ease the burning sensation.
  • Half glass of barley mixed in buttermilk and juice of half lime and taken twice daily works as an excellent diuretic.
  • Sandalwood oil taking daily along with one teaspoon of carom seeds and glass of water or ginger mixed in a cup of water is also very effective. Five drops of sandalwood oil can be taken initially and can be gradually increased to ten to thirty drops.

Diet of cystitis includes:

  • Avoiding solid foods for some time.
  • Patient should consume water or tender coconut water for three or four days.
  • Raw fruit juices especially cart juice should be taken after every two or three hours.
  • Ripen fruits can be added in the diet gradually.
  • A well balanced diet including seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits should be taken by patients suffering from cystitis.
  • Avoid refined carbohydrates and salt with food and in cooking.

Rest is very essential. Staying warm is recommended. Pain in the pelvis can be relieved by immersing it in hot water or by apply hot towel over the abdomen for three or four days. Applying cold compresses on the abdomen will also help relieve the pain and pelvic congestion.
