Dizziness


Dizziness is when an individual experiences light-headedness, unsteadiness and a feeling of fainting. It also result is a feeling of the surrounding rotating continuously this is also referred to as vertigo. Dizziness shakes the balance of individuals due to the signals sent to the brain by the eyes, inner ears and nervous systems not being processed because of the malfunction of the sensory system. However, it is not a serious disorder. Dizziness can be experienced by individuals on occasion or frequently.

Loss of balance, light headedness, feeling of fainting, weakness, feeling continuous rotation of self or the surroundings, blurring vision as head spins and nausea as some of the common symptoms of dizziness.

Causes of dizziness are:

  • Sudden drop of blood pressure or dehydration in blood causing lightheadedness.
  • Allergies, hypoglycemia, common cold, fever, diarrhea, vomiting or flu.
  • Malfunctioning of the inner ear, eyes or nervous system may cause loss of balance.
  • Stroke, heart attack, severe drop in blood pressure.

Patient suffering from dizziness are recommended to avoid the following items:

  • Diet drink or artificial sweeteners
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Eating sweet and salty foods together.

Drinking plenty water i.e. 8-12 glasses are day is recommended as it makes sure that the blood pressure does not drop due to exercise, high stress activities or due to hot climate.

Avoid taking too much stress or avoid activities requires steady concentration. Rise slowly from the bed or spend few minutes on the bed before waking up as this helps normalized the blood pressure. Avoid intake of certain drugs such as antihistamines and blood pressure medicine and consulate a doctor before continuing a dose. Sit down immediately when a feeling of dizziness is experienced will avoid possible injuries.
