Dry skin is not a disease it is just a condition that is experienced by people due to over exposure of the skin to certain elements. People have various types of skin, some have oily skin, some have dry skin and some have a combination of both dry and oily skin. Some people may also experience dry skin during winters and dry skin usually appears on the arms, legs and face. Therefore it is suggested that people moisturize themselves regularly and avoid exposure to extreme temperatures and dry winds.
Symptoms of dry skin include:
- Stretched and tight skin feeling especially after a wash.
- Urge of itching the dry skin.
- Appearance of white marks over the skin.
Causes of dry skin are lack of natural oils also known as sebum that is being secreted by the pores of the skin. It may be caused due to insufficient intake of water and other fluids. Exposure to harsh temperatures or chemicals may also cause dry skin. Improper diet can also lead to dry skin. Continuous exposure to sun and water especially sea water can also dry the skin.
Home remedies to cure dry skin include:
- Moisturize the skin regularly by applying some moisturizing cream of the affected area.
- A hot water bath in winter is very good, however body oil must be applied on the body before every bath to make sure the body does not lose any essential oils.
- A bath with milk is also beneficial for dry skin.
Diet for dry skin includes drinking plenty of water and fluids. Avoid consumption of alcohol as it can worsen the dry skin condition. Vitamin A, D and E can also benefit the skin and can be consumed in the form of capsules or through diet.
Avoid smoking as it can aggravate dry skin condition. Avoid keeping room temperature too high and use humidifiers. Harsh chemicals such as detergents and soaps should be avoided as they can result in dry skin. Usage of natural soaps is recommended and wearing gloves while washing dishes is also advisable.
