The Ear is divide into 3 sections: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Each section of the ear performs either hearing or balancing functions and the most sensitive part of the ear is the ear drum. Earache is very common in children and adults. Two major types of ear problems are otitis media and otitis externa. Otitis media is the infection of the middle ear and is mainly found among infants and children. Otitis externa also known as swimmer’s ear is the infection of the external ear and is commonly seen in boys and in the winter season. However, ear infection is not contagious.
Symptom of Otitis Media are:
• Pain and itch in the infected ear.
• Fever and falling sick
• Hearing problem in the infected era
• Dizziness in some cases
• Fluid discharge from the infected ear
• Vomiting
Symptoms for Otitis Externa are:
• Itch in the infected ear
• Discharge of fluid from the infected ear
• Severe pain upon movement of the ear lobe or the jaw
• Temporary reduction of hearing
• Slight fever
• Inflammation of the ear
Causes of otitis media include:
• Blockage of the Eustachian tube due to cold, allergy or foreign particles. This causes the fluid to build up in the middle ear causing swelling of the ear drum by the virus.
• If adenoid glands interfere with the Eustachian it will cause otitis media.
Otitis externa is caused by bacteria or fungi usually caused due to moist or wet conditions. Frequent swimming or exposure to water causes this infection. Skin allergies can also cause otitis externa.
Other causes include deficiency of nutrition, allergy and other infections.
Remedies for infected ears:
• Put few drops of garlic juice in the infected ear.
• Use blow dryer to dry the water from the ear.
• Put few drops of warm olive oil into the ear.
• Apply few drops of lobella extracts on the infected ear and massage gently.
• Wash ear using colloidal silver as it acts as an antibiotic.
• Warm mango leaf juice and use as ear drops.
• Increase intake of Vitamin C as it pumps up the immune system.
• Increase intake of Zinc as it reduces infection.
• Maintain a healthy diet rich in calcium.
• Avoid process foods and hydrogenated oils.
• Breast feed infants with infection.
• Avoid cigarette smoke as it blocks the Eustachian. Also avoid cold and wash hands regularly.
